Suzanne graduated from The University of Cambridge in 1989 and 1992. She qualified as an architect in 1995 and worked in Architectural practice from 1990-1998 in London, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Since 2002, she has been a partner at zone architects, an Edinburgh-based award-winning design practice specialising in one-off residential and food related projects. Engagement with teaching began as a Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Newcastle School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape from 1998 where she ran first year architectural design studios, supervised final year thesis work, and curated a sequence of public lecture series in collaboration with Northern Architecture. She gained a Certificate of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education in 2001. From 2002, Suzanne has been based in Architecture at the University of Edinburgh, and has worked across all stages of architectural education, most recently directing Master of Architecture studios and related postgraduate Masters work.
She is currently on the steering group of the AHRA (Architectural Humanities Research Association), and recently chaired Field/Work, the 6th AHRA Conference held in Edinburgh (2009). An ongoing interest is the potential of inventive public exhibition and presentation in furthering, enriching and connecting research, teaching and design. Suzanne actively contributes to debates on architecture, education and research and has been an invited guest critic, design workshop leader and external examiner at various European Schools of Architecture.
